We are helping to organize the 2022 edu-i-day, a half-day of talks and workshops hosted at USI in Lugano, for the yearly meeting of SVIA/SSIE/SSII (the Swiss Highschool Informatics Teacher Association).

  • «Pitfalls in Teaching Programming»

    Learning to program is difficult. Looking at programming language theory can shed some light on what makes programming hard and what might help to scaffold learning.

  1. Diagram Clinic
    Igor Moreno Santos, USI
    Do you draw any diagrams when you teach programming? How do you know they are not misleading? Submit them to the diagram clinic to have them checked out by our resident diagram clinician.
  2. Educational Escape Rooms
    Masiar Babazadeh, SUPSI
    Teamwork, puzzle solving, a great narrative, and a short time to get out: in the past few years escape rooms became a successful format that stimulates logic, intuition, and collaboration activating unexpected resources and giving the possibility to players to learn while playing. How can we exploit this dynamic and ludic format in educational contexts?
  3. Computer science in high school education in 2038?
    Vincent Tscherter, Kantonsschule Solothurn
    Regardless of the upcoming reforms, what is your personal vision for computer science education? Will it still be focused on computers and science? What about the elephant in the room? Will we finally give up on teaching programming and leave it to some artificial intelligence? With inputs from students, we want to develop visions for sustainable teaching in the long term.
  4. A visual way to teach problem decomposition

    One of the central pillars of informatics is the ability to solve problems by decomposing them into simpler parts. Learn how to do this in a motivating way by decomposing pictures with PyTamaro!
  5. Exploiting common misconceptions for better teaching

    Are you sure you have no misconceptions about the programming language you teach? Learn how you can find out, and how you can fix them with progmiscon.
