Abstract
We can easily open a dictionary and read a definition of learning. But what does it really mean to learn? How can we tell if genuine learning has occurred? Drawing on research in education, this talk will discuss the central concept of transfer of learning. We will explore a worrying number of cases in which students fail to demonstrate both far and near transfer. Programming education is no exception: learning to program in one domain does not guarantee success in other domains. This evidence challenges teachers’ and researchers’ practices, as transfer is the cornerstone of education.
